“True” NY-style pizza emerges from the coal-fired brick ovens of these separately owned “bang-for-the-buck” pie joints; the West Village “institution” is “worth the wait in line” ( “forget the decor” ), while the “huge” Theater District outlet is set in an old church with “beautiful” stained-glass windows.

Ate here for a late lunch on a Wednesday. Didn't have to wait for a table, but it was pretty busy for 2:00-3:30. Highly recommend getting pepperoni and mushroom on a pizza. That was my favorite. Definitely try the sliced meatballs on at least half of your pizza, as well. The pepperoni was memorably good. We got two larges for four people, which ended up being way too much. Two slices per person would have been plenty. Great ambience. The place felt very authentic. The wait staff was nice and helpful. The bathroom was clean (although small). Overall, great experience!

Surprisingly really good pizza. Had a pizza with half sausage and mushroom and half plain cheese. The crust was excellent. The sausage was delicious, and the original cheese was just as good. I went on a Wed. night and watched the place fill up pretty quickly. John's is a no-frills location with high-quality pizza. I would definitely go back.

This place was a little pricey and the service had a LOT to be desired. But I'm told that's just how it is in New York. I mean, sure, the pizza was absolutely amazing, but it could have been the best pizza I ever had (and it wasn't. That would be pizza in Rome, Italy) and the service and cost would still bring it down to just three stars. 26$ for a medium pizza with one topping? I wasn't expecting dominos prices or anything but 22 bucks for cheese? Four bucks for each topping? Come on. Still, if you wanna spend a lot of money, you ALMOST get what you pay for as, again, the quality was top notch. Just maybe hire servers who can pay attention and/or at least smile every so often.
