Madcap
Stylish outpost for Cal-Japanese fare
Californian · $$$
Chef Ron Siegel (Rancho Nicasio, Michael Mina, Masa) locates his first solo restaurant in downtown San Anselmo, putting a Japanese spin on local, seasonal produce and seafood served with wine, beer and sake-based cocktails. There’s a chef’s tasting menu, too, offered in an intimate, urban-chic interior with rustic hardwoods, a marble-topped bar, velvet banquettes and custom, earth-toned serving dishes.

I just returned to Madcap on Saturday. The food was amazing again. But, this time the service was not up to snuff. My wife said it was an amazing dinner with Olive Garden service. It is a shame because I had great service the first time I ate at Madcap. This time, our waitress took our order but we never saw her again until we ordered desert. Our food was delivered by a young guy who knew very little about what he was serving.

An evening of pure joy. Wonderful and creative plates using ingredients that I might never order that thrill my taste buds anyway. The service is both efficient and friendly. We will be back!

Wow, just wow. That's about all I can say. We live nearby and have seen this location change hands over the years. The restaurant is very unassuming from the outside, so we weren't immediately drawn in. But we kept hearing the buzz so thought we would give it a try. We were lucky to get in on a cancellation for a special birthday dinner. We loved the atmosphere, very comfortable booths, nice mix of old and new in the design. Server was very knowledgeable, attentive and very professional. And the FOOD!! I did not want to share mine with my husband, it was that good. The chicken was exceptional with unusual yet subtle flavors, so tender with crispy skin. Green salad, oh my! And we wanted one of every dessert, we don't normally order dessert, because most menus don't have anything that sounds good. Not so here, we wanted it all, and tried two. The caramel pot de creme was scrumptious!
