Southern comfort food in a stylish space
Southern American · Harlem · $$
The Zagat Review
“Down-home” Southern dishes including a “fan-favorite” chicken ’n’ waffles ensure this “comforting” Harlem American remains “loved by all” ; indeed, the “friendly” atmosphere trumps the “cramped” setting and “long waits” for its “to-die-for” brunch.

The Food was Absolutely Delicious!!! Warm and Cozy Atmosphere!!! Had the chance to meet Mrs. Melba. What a Beautiful Person!!! We enjoyed conversing with her. It was like hanging out with family. That's how she made us feel, Like Family!!! Thank you Mrs. Melba. If your in NYC , make your way Uptown (Harlem) and stop on by Melba's. You Will Not be disappointed!!!

Melba’s is a classic Harlem restaurant a great choice for Southern comfort food. Decently sized, a good place for both small and large group dining. Mediocre décor, which they make up for with great service and delicious food. We were celebrating a birthday; the staff was very accommodating when we added two more persons to our group last minute. They also helped with our request for candles (for cupcakes we brought with us). I believe there is a cutting fee if you bring in a cake. They also help sing happy birthday. Our server and other staff were attentive for the duration of our time there. We were there on a Friday night. The music went with the atmosphere and patrons including our table seemed to enjoy it. The food was very tasty straightforward comfort food. Decently priced menu with extensive choices both from starters to entrees. Portions were very large. The best part were the sides which you get the choice of two with any entrée. I highly recommend the mac and cheese, collard greens, and yams. The only negative thing I can say was that the drinks were a bit watered down and seemed more like mixed juice than alcohol. Will definitely visit again.

I respect a business owner who works from the bottom up to offer a customer the best experience. Unfortunately, as a longtime Harlem Resident of 30 years, I was truly disappointed in the experiences I’ve had over the last two and today’s final visit to Melba’s. Ms. Melba, you have fallen short of who you and your restaurant used to be. I would be embarrassed to greet patrons knowing that things are still not together even after having your flaws pointed out to you on public television. I just walked out having paid for drinks instead of a meal order exactly two hours ago. Chicken and waffles doesn’t take 2 hours. The staff is clearly being stretched beyond their limits. Instead of being the concierge, you may want to work on the supply s chain system which is missing a few links. It was a great disappointment. Stay away from the establishment on Sunday. Either way NO food should take 2 hours.
