The Zagat Review
“Take the kids” to this ’50s-era chain for “good, old-fashioned” American diner food (including “breakfast anytime” ) served in a “retro drive-in atmosphere” complete with “jukeboxes at the tables” ; while the “basic” fare is “nothing special” , at least the joints are “open late and early in the morning.”

This place was actually pretty good! We ate here for dinner on our last night of vacation. However, after dinner we we're ready to head back to the hotel, pack and unwind but when we returned to our car in the parking lot we discovered it had been broken into! The Diner itself, they were awesome. Our food was delicious and customer service was spot on! The location? Maybe keep your cars parked near the diner.

Stopped for a late dinner on a work trip. Candy was my server. AWESOME!!! Kind, attentive, attractive; quite possibly the best service ever. My HUGE burger was excellent. Bathrooms are tiny, but at least they have them. Good location but parking is tight. I'll certainly cone here again. Highly recommended!

I love diners. I spent my formative years in diners. Heck, two mornings before eating at the Mel's on Lombard Street, I ate ate the Mel's on Mission, where the food and service were excellent. I had high hopes for the Mel's on Lombard, but they were, unfortunately, not realized. Mel's on Lombard has one shining attribute: On Fridays and Saturdays it's open 24 hours. This worked out well as I was I transit for an early flight out of SFO and wanted a good breakfast before entering the American air transportation food desert. It took five or six minutes for my party to be acknowledged, despite a mostly empty restaurant at 5:00 in the morning. When were were finally seated, it took another five or six minutes for the waitress to take drink orders. Then there was a long wait for the waitress to reappear to take food orders. I generally prefer a build your own omelette option, which Mel's provides. Being a little bit of a planner, I wrote down the four ingredients I wanted in the omelette (plus avocado on top). When the omelette arrived, it was missing two of the ingredients. It went back. Instead of remaking the omelette, it came back with some cheese haphazardly sprinkled on the inside. It was still missing the fourth ingredient (spinach) and was now overcooked. The waitress apologized profusely, but no accommodation was offered. Happily, the others in my party received their food promptly and correctly (which raised this 1.5 star review to 3 stars). Would I go back? Maybe, but only because San Francisco has a dearth of 24 hour breakfast options.
