From wd~50 alum John McCarthy (who also owns The Crimson Sparrow in Hudson), this Kips Bay spot draws on Japanese izakaya cooking, serving hot and cold small plates with vibrant flavors and textures. Sakes, beers, cocktails and a few wines are also offered in the slender, simple space with bar and table seating.

Food was interesting yet delicious. Friendly staff and cool atmosphere. I would try izakaya fried chicken next time.

Cozy place with a modern feel. Mostly small plates with the rice/noodle dishes being generally more filling. The presentation/composition of the dishes looks great. Unfortunately there is still some work to do in terms of flavor. The tuna cold appetizer and the grilled squid were a bit disappointing.

Izakaya 'casual' style restaurant doesnt disappoint on trying to push the boundaries of flavors on Japanese dishes and techniques. No sushi or ramen here! It's a tapas-style where you can quite comfortably order half a dozen dishes and not feel over full or heavy. The food is interesting, with the fried chicken and seasame sauce, and the tempura style squash blossoms - delish! Drink selection is perfect match for the food, with glass/carafe/bottles of sake, with matching Japanese whiskey and beers to go with. Great service as well.
