Peter Luger Steak House
Celebrated Brooklyn chophouse since 1887
Steakhouse · Williamsburg · $$$$
The Zagat Review
“Still the one and only” , this circa-1887 Williamsburg “monument to meat” sets the bar with its “buttery” house-aged beef ( “they define porterhouse” ) served by “cantankerous” career waiters in a “busy” “old-time” German beer hall setting; the “rough-and-tumble” style “only adds to the charm” , but prices are “stiff” and they don’t take plastic, so come with “a lot of cash.”

Peter Luger has been voted the best steakhouse in New York for years, and for good reason. What can I say, the steak is just divine!! Perfectly seasoned top quality meat cooked exactly the way you like it. Their signature steak sauce goes perfectly with the steak and does not overpower the meat. Loved the creamed spinach too. It's the kind of food you dream about when you're hungry. I've eaten here twice and will keep eating here whenever I'm in New York. With food this good, you'd tend to forgive their small misses like water rings left by the previous patrons still on your table or the slightly unkempt washroom or the fact that they don't accept credit cards or online reservations (you'd have to call). Still deserving of the the title and its one Michelin star in my book.

My favorite part of this was the service. In spite of forgetting one or two things, it was almost worth it to see how smoothly and cheerfully (and quickly!) they took care of it. All of the food was delicious, with the steak cooked perfectly, even for one in our party who liked medium instead of medium rare. Wasn't overly impressed by the bar cocktails, but that's not why we were there. Overall, was very happy to have finally visited this legendary spot. I've had slightly better steak before, but felt like we had an exceptionally-flavorful meal for a respectable price.

Peter Luger is a historic chophouse in Brooklyn and probably one of the most famous steakhouses in America. This is a great place to try if you are a fan of good steaks and enjoy eating at iconic restaurants during your travels. Opening hours are 11.45am until late each night. Reservations can only be taken by phone and tables are held no more than 15 minutes if you arrive late. Further note, this is a cash only restaurant so arrive prepared as credit cards are not accepted. We dined here for lunch during a recent visit to NYC and did enjoy our experience. Seating areas are made up of wooden walls, floor, round tables and chairs and stylish chandeliers. This is very much the style of a late 19th-century chophouse instead of the more modern and sophisticated steakhouse contemporaries back in Manhattan. During our meal, we had the Steak for 4. This was a large, dry-aged porterhouse nicely grilled at medium rare and served on a sizzling plate. The steak was pretty good - not the best porterhouse we've ever had but pretty good. Sides of spinach and potatoes were fine while beer, cocktail and wine drinks tasted as expected. Cheesecake dessert was lighter than your typical Juniors and went down well after a heavy steak lunch. In the end, Peter Luger may not go down as your favourite steak restaurant in the world but it is a fun place to try at least once in your life.
