Tiny & long-running New American eatery
New American · East Village · $$$
The Zagat Review
An “innovator that’s stood the test of time” , chef Gabrielle Hamilton’s East Village “standout” serves a “perfectly curated” menu of “exceptional” New American dishes in “unfailingly professional” style; the only drawbacks are a “toooo small” room with seating “on top of your neighbors” and long lines for the “fabulous brunch.”

We had wanted to dine at Prune for some time after seeing Gabriel on Mind of a Chef and reading her book. We got the opportunity when we were in town to see Pearl Jam inducted to the R&R HOF. We were running a bit late due to traffic but on the nice side so was the restaurant. They called and said they were delayed due to a random inspection (passed) and we would be seated at the bar for a few minutes. We were met on arrival and seated at the bar and offered some complimentary bubbly while we waited. The space is cozy and lively but still intimate. We tried several dishes and oddly our favorite was a dish with cheese and honey. and an appetizer that was a crudites with garlic oil. We were both a bit underwhelmed with our mains of Salmon and Pigeon. I had the pigeon and while I understand this is served rare it did not have much else going on beyond the bird itself. Just seemed like it needed more flavor or maybe I just don't appreciate pigeon? Either way, it was a fun experience and we would consider going again if we have the opportunity and try a few other items.

First off, the Dutch-style pancake was the best I've ever had - a crispy, fluffy, slice of heaven! The brunch menu was unique and the dishes we had were delicious. The location is small and cute. Occasional waits for this trendy spot. Definitely would return to check out the dinner offerings.

Had a great brunch at Prune yesterday. Yes, it's a bit snug inside, and yes, the line can be significant, but once you're in, the staff is attentive and friendly. Orders come quickly. I had the steak and eggs, and both were perfect. One of the best breakfasts in memory, in fact. I'd love to try the dinner menu next time.
