German eatery with famed holiday decor

The Zagat Review
Best experienced “around the holidays” , this circa-1968 Gramercy German “time warp” is a “sight to see” when the “lavish” Christmas decorations go up ( “bring your sunglasses” ); too bad the “run-of-the-mill” food makes a case for just a “drink at the bar.”

Zagat Mentions of Rolf's

Food is pretty bad, almost uneatable and way overpriced. Two schnitzels ($30 each), side of cabbage ($10) and one beer ($16) were $94. People that like this place prob never had a real German food. Schnitzel almost seemed deep fried and the breading was way too salty and there was no meat really. Side of red cabbage was good. The service was good as well.

It is true, NOTHING remains the same. Change is inevitable. Rolf's no longer offers tasty tidbits adorning the bar. I can remember going there and it was always packed to the door. It was that way for years. No longer. Unfortunately, I did not have a camera but Rolf's would change their decorations four times a year. The Christmas goods were still hanging from the ceiling. And, the recipes were not passed along with the sale of the once lively establishment.

Drinks were a bit pricey, but good. Nice place to sit by the bar during off peak hours and have some Christmas “spirits” in spring :). Brought some friends who were visiting out of town, and they absolutely loved it. I would call ahead to make sure there’s no line, because it can get ridiculous. Not sure how the food is. The menu seems to be overpriced, but I guess it’s all about feeling like your dinning inside a Christmas tree, which is lovely. Would say grab a drink here, and walk over to Irving for dinner.
