Sit-down spin-offs of the LES appetizing store, these “modern” riffs on a “classic Jewish deli” serve “top-shelf” smoked fish and other “real-deal” “old-world” eats; the “spiffy” digs are often “busy” (expect waits, especially at brunch), and the certified kosher location at the Jewish Museum adds a take-out counter.

I had the herring plate. If herring is your thing, that's heaven. Do try their special drinks. They are very good. We also tried a Cherry Shrub. It was a very nice surprise. Full of flavor and very refreshing. The knish are the best here. This goes without saying. The latkes are also a great choice. Oh, and if you want just a bit of herring (yes, I love the stuff) then give the Herring Trio a try. All dishes are elegantly presented. The restaurant looks modern and old fashioned at the same time. I particularly like that it feels clean and well maintained. At peak times there can be a very long wait and they do not take reservations. Come prepared for this and it's worth it. We went on a late Saturday afternoon and were seated right away.

I'm seriously so happy Russ & Daughters opened a cafe, it's probably the best thing to happen since I've been back to NY. Please do yourself a favor and eat here. The food quality is unmatched, service is wonderful, and the cafe has the quintessential diner feel. Comfort food at it's best!

We had four days exploring the neighborhood on foot, the Tenement Museum, etc. One of the highlights was our stop at Russ & Daughters. What a delightful restaurant. Service and food is spectacular and ambiance and history pure joy. The menu is varied, but our favorite would the salmon egg breakfast!
