A “New York classic” dating to 1914, this “incomparable” LES “temple of noshes” is a “smoked fish heaven” known for “sublime salmon” and a “zillion varieties of herring” , plus “proper bagels” , sandwiches and sweets, all courtesy of a “knowledgeable” counter crew; “oy vey” is it “small” , “crowded” and “pricey” , but for “old-world Jewish” fare, there’s “no comparison.”

I can't say enough about this place. They have been in business since 1914 for good reason. If you want the original make sure you go to the "grocery" location. They specialize in seafood and have about eight different types of herring. They have about 8 or 12 different types of cream cheese make sure you try the scallion or caviar cream cheese. They also have at least six different types of lox. The Gasped lox is delicious. The wild caught Norwegian, however, is amazing. It is a little saltier but melts in your mouth and leaner...wow... There is usually a line take a number when you first walk in the door. Don't worry though the guys behind the counter are professional are used to the crowd and they take care of every need. Ask for the works on your bagel and you get Capers slice tomatoes and onion to finish it off! Don't forget to check out their extensive dried fruit section and their traditional desserts like Babka and glace orange rinds....

It was my birthday and I was in the city with my sister. She took me to Russ and Daughters Cafe for lunch. I have to say, all the hype is true. The ingredients in everything they serve are the highest quality and are delicious. The old school ambiance makes the place extra charming as well. There's a reason this place is a NYC institution! I went with my sister's recommendation on what to order, and I was delighted with what she picked - I would highly recommend the Whitefish & Baked Salmon Salad, or the Gaspe Nova lox and scallion cream cheese combination on a plain bagel. You won't be disappointed, I promise! I wish I could go back there now!

Russ & Daughters is a quintessential New York institution that's been in its location for over 100 years! They have a cafe just a few blocks away as well if you want sit down service, but the shop is for takeaway. There is usually a decent line, but it goes very quickly, and the workers are incredibly knowledgeable about the product and able to help you find what you want. Even if you are not typically a huge fish fan, I would HIGHLY recommend the Irish Smoked Salmon Bagel sandwich, it transformed me into someone who thinks beyond the simple bagel + cream cheese combo. If you're near East Village/ Lower East Side/ Soho and looking for a filling and delicious traditional New York breakfast on-the-go, this is the place for you!
