Sassafras American Eatery Capitol Hill
Sprawling spot for Southern cuisine
Southern American · Capitol Hill · $$
The Jefferson Park original occupies a quaint 1889 Victorian with a wraparound porch, while its siblings in Capitol Hill and Golden are bigger and jazzier – but all turn out “very tasty” , “nouveau Southern” breakfast and lunch fare (including some of the “best biscuits and gravy in town” ); with po' boys, beignets, eggs Sardou and booze too, you'll “feel like you're back” on the Gulf Coast.

I wish I had pictures to show, because everything was so delicious. I started with the Bloody Mary which was the perfect amount of spicy goodness. There were 8 of us and we shared the pickled devil eggs and two plates of beignets that were light and buttery. Every breakfast dish from the Roasted Vegetable Grits, to the Mac & Cheese Breakfast, to the Biscuits & Gravy were heavenly. Can't wait to go back!

Awesome atmosphere, food is TO DIE FOR! I had the sausage gravy & biscuits and it was the most exceptional plate of comfort food I've ever tasted. Being from Florida, aka the south, I know my SG&B. My girlfriend had the shrimp & grits, and the presentation was great! They stack the fried grits "rectangles" in a perfect square and top it with HUGE shrimp. The fresh jam they provide is excellent as well, and the mimosas we had were incredible. The service was great, the atmosphere was very cozy and it wasn't too loud even though it was packed. Our server was kind and had interesting conversations with us. 5 stars WAY up!!

The food is tasty, and there are lots of savory options. Would have been five stars except the staff was so slow. Brunch for two at the bar, and although it want that busy on the restaurant it took a long time to order, get the check, pay the bill... We sat for 10 or 15 minutes with credit cards on our check and our plates and glasses bussed, waiting to pay.
