An "interesting menu" of American tapas and other "upscale comfort" food is served by "lovely" staffers at these SF siblings, where dining "outdoors under the stars" in restaurant alley Belden Place can feel "very European" ; the "relaxed" Hayes Valley original offers "a good buy for pre-theater."

The staff are lovely. The place is nice, and in a good location (down a little side street with lots of other bars and restaurants. The wine selection was good and we had a very quaffable red. However it is the food that lets this place down. On the face of it, the menu reads as creative with some great ideas, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. The coating on the mushroom chips was way too floury, dry, bland and caked on. The macaroni cheese was bland. The crab wontons were suspiciously fishy...to the point that we didn't eat it (just in case...having said that I had no stomach issues at all), and the dipping sauce it came with just did not compliment the dish at all. All in all, it was very disappointing. I may pop in for a drink on the way somewhere else, but I wouldn't bother eating here again.

The booths near the back smell kind of bad, like puke. Pretty consistently too (we often get seated there). I love the crab roll so much. I wish they just default offered fries instead of chips as a side; you can ask to sub. The veg options could be better.

Great vibe, food was very good, cozy...would go again. In a nice side street. Prices are high, as usual in this city.
