Simon & The Whale
Handsome spot for globally accented fare
Murray Hill · $$$
From Gabriel Stulman (Bar Sardine, Fedora), this upscale Gramercy dinner spot in the Freehand New York is strong on seafood and bright produce, accenting the dishes with Japanese and Italian flavors. The furnishings have a rich midcentury-modern look, while the counters facing the corner windows offer a lively view.

Went in with the highest expectations and they were exceeded on all levels: ambience, service, food were absolutely perfect. It seems impossible to go wrong, but it’s worth noting again and again and again: Simon & The Whale approach everything with both a fresh eye and a focus on what will deliver the greatest satisfaction in taste. Every dish is a work of art that goes beyond “Instagramable plating.” The depth and inventiveness are not novelties; the restaurant has produced items like a Pork Milanese that is not different for the sake of being different. It’s a tiny bit thicker than the usual pounded out flat cutlet and is instead something richer and more sublime. And that’s just one example. The bread is special too. No description could it justice. And above all, the down-to-earth staff is not just accommodating, generous, and knowledgeable, they are the best dining companions you could hope to spend time with. We wished Ken and Emily could have pulled up a chair at our table. Suffice to say, Simon & The Whale appeals to all senses and it redefines what a truly spectacular restaurant should aspire to.

I'm torn giving this restaurant such high ratings but on the food alone it deserves 4 stars and the service is definitely above excellent. The problems I have are the long wait time without a reservation and it is pricey (but so is every other restaurant in Manhattan)

NEVER MORE DISAPPOINTED. My first time eating at this establishment and having been to this group's other restaurants, was excited about trying this one. The service is their achilles heel. We sat at a bar table and were ignored for periods of up to 30 mins. We had 3 different waiters and it took us nearly 2 hours to get fed. In the end, As I was leaving what I thought was a tip according to the service (needless to say was not a very good one) when I was accosted by the manager who reminded me that the servers and waitstaff have rent to pay and I should just suck it up and tip 20%. In the end the incompetence level was so severe...they could not help but charge me twice for my meal. WHAT A SHAME because the food was fantastic. Management needs to get their act together or perhaps choose a different profession.
