云之南 South of the Clouds
Eatery for Yunnan-style mixian noodles
Asian · Greenwich Village · $$
Yunnan-style mixian rice noodles star at this Village eatery (whose chef-owner Lihen Geng hails from the family behind Brooklyn’s Yun Nan Flavour Garden), with some served in a four-hour chicken broth, and others plated with minced pork and vegetables. There are also a few appetizers and house drinks, such as a regional tea made with rose jam.

2.2.18 - I was extremely skeptical going into this spot, but I was very surprised by The Signature Crossing The Bridge noodles, the Tofu Rice Noodles, and the Ghost Chicken. The soup base for the signature dish was light and full of flavor, but it lost its impact as it cooled down. The ingredients were spot on and fresh. The rice noodles was equally as good and full of flavor. I appreciated the texture if the rice noodle because is dead relatively thick and carried the flavors with it. The Ghost Chicken was moist and slightly spicy. Definitely legitimate food. The service is okay, but the host/waitress was very good at greeting and placing people at the table. You should show up before 630 to get seated quickly; after 7 you will wait 20-30 minutes. We saw at another table a bowl of noodles sent back because the meat was still raw, so be careful.

I LOVED Yunnan flavor snack! We used to drive over there to get there cold noodles and eat them in the car when it was the little tiny place on the side street in Brooklyn's Chinatown. Of all the dishes we tried here at the Manhattan branch of the family business, the cold noodles were the best. The rest of the dishes were not that interesting. The service was extremely disorganized. We got served tea that was cold twice in the same meal. I come back in the summer time for the cold noodles since it's more convenient then going out to Brooklyn but I probably get them to go and eat them in the car.

Love their rice noodles and dynamic ambience! My go-to place for Yunnan rice noodles in the city. Service is a bit slow since they just soft-opened couple weeks ago, but I think they will get better day by day! I highly recommend it!!!
