The Zagat Review
"If you can't go to Tokyo" , this "homey" Platt Park "institution" "will do" – after all, "Denver's premier" sushi bar still "lives up to the reputation it's been building" since 1984, "thrilling your tongue" with "exquisite" raw fish, "perfectly battered tempura" and other Japanese specialties provided by a "courteous" staff; there's "always a line to get in" , but the "crowds" (and slightly expensive tabs) are worth it for a "true" dining experience.

I called in the afternoon and asked about a reservation, they told me they couldn’t take reservations for two. We tried our luck anyway, once we got there we checked in at 5:30, they estimated a 40 min wait. As we waited we noticed several parties of two with reservations walk in and get seated...? The place was a mad house. We ended up waiting for an hour and forty five minutes. During that time we went and checked our place on the waiting list three times and the hostesses gave us different answers every time. First time they said we were the next two top, second time they said we were ‘close’ and it would be about 15 to 20 minutes. Third time they said they weren’t sure, it would depend when people got up. So basically they had no clue at the hostess stand from the start. We also noticed standing there that every party that walked in no matter what size was quoted ‘an hour plus’. I get the place is popular, that’s great, but at least try to give a semi accurate time estimate (like within an hour variance...) so we can move on and enjoy our night somewhere else. Anyhow we ended up leaving an never ate, we finally got the text two hours after check in. I’d say try it on a weekday, don’t bother with the weekend or with a large group.

Since I moved to Denver, I’ve been coming to Sushi Den for 20+ years whenever I crave for sushi and good Japanese food. The sushi is excellent here and in my opinion, the best in Denver. Also, other Japanese dish on the menu are really good, too. You won’t be disappointed with whatever you order here. But FYI, their service is mediocre. Don’t forget to try their dessert menu. It’s like the ones you would get in Japan. Sweetness is just right and not overwhelming. It gets very busy during peak time at both lunch and dinner. To avoid a long wait, come early when it’s opened or after the peak.

The sushi here is amazing! Seriously mouth watering. Even something as simple as a California roll tastes great and melts in your mouth. A little pricey but worth it!
