Swan Oyster Depot
Venerable seafood bar in a fish market

The Zagat Review
For over 100 years, this "no-frills" lunch counter and fish market in Polk Gulch has been a "San Francisco treasure" , serving up "oysters galore" , "phenomenal clam chowder" and other "forms of perfection from the sea" alongside "Anchor Steam on draft" ; it might be "hard to believe a place so decrepit" and "so expensive" still draws "lines out the door" , but "nostalgics" insist the lively "banter with the owners behind the counter" is the extra sauce sealing its deal as "the Valhalla of seafood" ; P.S. open till 5:30 PM.

A fun, dining expensive in this long and narrow restaurant where you'll see the staff preparing your food in front of you. If you're unfamiliar with oysters, feel free to ask the staff for advice and recommendations. Or you could just order a large platter and get a couple of each type. The wait was very long though (an hour an a half, if I remember correctly) but I really enjoyed the experience. Really tasty and fresh oysters. Would I wait again?! Yes!

The wait was really ridiculous here. We waited for close to 90 minutes on a Friday afternoon around 3:30pm. While it was a unique experience, you're served seafood at the bar, I'm not sure it was worth the wait. If you come from a place that has great shellfish and seafood, I would skip this place. The prices were not too bad overall but save your time and enjoy other food options in the city.

a place to go, great seafood, quirky but very friendly service, a design and layout which hasn't changed since 50 years and all for a reasonable price.. expect some waiting time, as it's very busy.... grab a drink from the counter and exchange stories with your new friends, also waiting for a seat.... it's worthwhile, definitely
