The Zagat Review
"Steeped in SF history" , this circa-1849 Downtown seafooder represents "old-school dining at its finest" , with a "damned good" menu highlighted by a "famous" cioppino and "fresh-out-of-the-oven" sourdough bread; granted, it's "constantly packed" and "loud" (plus there are no reservations), but a "vibrant" air, "fun people-watching" and "banter" with the "longtime" staff compensate.

Excellent. I visited here a couple years ago and was resisting going back because I always want to try new things in SFO. I couldn't remember why my brain kept pulling me here, though. Well, I figured out it was pulling me here for the excellent service, great food, gigantic menu, and fantastic old school vibe. Great place to go if you're in town on business and eating alone. Massive counter area makes it feel like the restaurant was designed just for people like you. Highly recommended.

Best for one or two people. Very small restaurant with bar stools and mostly tables for two. There are less than 10 tables for 3 or more. But the seafood is great! Calamari steaks! Rock fish or whatever is in season. This is real San Francisco. I ate there in the 70s when I lived there and always go back when I am in the city.

Knowledgable and skilled bar staff, an excellent menu and one of my favourite menus in SF with a veritable cornucopia of seafood and more terrestrial fare. The decor is classic, with pendant lamps and wood detail. And you're like me and don't want to grab a cocktail or dinner while everyone is staring at the game, this place is for you.
