The Food Market
Former food store serving American fare
American · Hampden · $$
From the open kitchen of a former Hampden grocery store made famous in John Waters’ film Pecker, chef Chad Gauss crafts traditional Americana with a distinctive twist. The sleek interior has rustic overtones, and a bar pouring cool cocktails until late make it a favorite on ‘the Avenue.’

The food is average. The drinks are average. The service is on point. The decor is beautiful. I am not sure why people make it seems as if the food is so amazing. Have given this place 4 tries over a period of a few years. I like it but that wow factor these fake foodies give it, well, it is not there. For me anyway. If my friends insist, I always go.

Went during restaurant week on a Monday with a group of five, including myself. Apparently they automatically add a 20% tip for groups of this size, which explains why the service was basically non-existent. Our food arrived before our silverware did, a simple mistake which took far too long to correct as our waiter was nowhere to be found. Drink refills were also hard to come by. The potato and leek soup was mostly cream, and the crab pot pie was extremely watery. The bread pudding was actually amazing, however. I was going to let the lack of service and less than impressive food go, but then to add a 20% tip! We will not be back.

I take all my out of town friends/family here for brunch! Food is always tasty, I haven’t gotten anything that I didn’t like. The complimentary mini donuts are great too. Service is also pretty great, only once did I feel like waitstaff wasn’t being attentive.
