The Zagat Review
Spun off from its "groundbreaking" Fillmore District neighbor State Bird Provisions, this "magical" New American "consistently wows" with cooking that’s "creative without being fussy" , presented in a "shareable family-style" format; the "outstanding" service and "convivial" bi-level surroundings (with a mezzanine overlooking the kitchen) are "wonderful for a gathering" that’s "non-stuffy" but "still feels very grown-up."

Superb food, atmosphere and serving. Every dish is served family style, so you grab a little bit of the dish onto your own plate. Such a relaxing way of eating extremely good food. You order everything Ala carte and the dishes comes in as they finish and according to their category of which there are five. The final dish(es) is the "main course" or of the large platter category if you order any of those. These require 2-6 persons. For two persons, they recommend 4-6 dishes of which the large platters would correspond to 2. 6 dishes was perfect for two. Every dish is extremely well-balanced in taste and amount. It was a very good experience.

Very disappointed. The seats are SO UNCOMFORTABLE. I COULD NOT ENJOY THE MEAL OR EXPERIENCE because of the seating. Hey Progress are you listening ! Your seats SUCK. You sit on hard wood, your back sits against hard wood. Middle of dinner and I'm pissed because I can't enjoy myself. What else, the portions are micro sized. The menu says everything is to be shared, but the portions are barely enough for two persons. Who are you guys kidding. Doesn't matter how good the food is, even thought I taste it... When all I can think about is how much my back hurts due to the incredibly poor seating. Zero stars for.comfort. 1 star for the food and service. Will never come back.

Since I can't EVER seem to get a reservation or table at State Bird Provisions *cough* I decided to try their sister restaurant The Progress. My first visit was in July, my wife and I treated my mother for her birthday. We had what I assumed would remain the best meal I'd eat this decade. That was until last Saturday when my mother treated me to a birthday meal there that somehow managed to blow the last one out of the water. Highly recommended, just be prepared to spend some serious (like four dollar signs serious) money there.
