Top of the Mark
Iconic cocktail bar with panoramic views
Bar · Nob Hill · $$$
“On a crystal-clear evening” there’s “no better place in town” than this “incredibly romantic” , “sentimental” favorite “perched on top of the Mark Hopkins Hotel” in Nob Hill, where the “360-degree” view is “magic” ; a “slick” staff delivers “meticulous martinis” from an “extensive list” (it’s “actually a book” ), and though prices are “sky-high” , “you really do get what you pay for” , especially when you can dance to a “classy jazz trio” or other live bands Wednesdays–Saturdays.

Here for the buffet and views - and it did not disappoint. The food was satisfying and filling and they don’t skimp on the fancier fares, such as caviar. The views are just breathtaking, even at the reception, where we waited a bit because we arrived early. We were generously offered drinks while waiting. The walls have some cool vintage pictures that capture the vibe of the place in its early years.

Christmas Dinner Buffet was $145/pp and not a turkey drumstick nor pumpkin pie to be seen. VERY disappointed that they did not actually offer ANY "standard Christmas fare" (even though it was advertised it would available). There were indeed many delicious-looking dishes to try, however, many fell short for me. For example, the "braised short ribs were mostly fat, the lobster bisque soup (that I had craved all week after seeing it on the nenu) had ONE small piece of lobster in it (and I had to fish around and strain to get that!); and the lobster ravioli was so chewy and cold I left it on my plate. The dessert table almost made me laugh. Although it was colorful, The Mark was missed once again since there wasn't a single "typical" holiday dessert to be seen. One huge positive mention is that the bread pudding was outstanding! Maybe we will try the Christmas Brunch next year...

Get here early to grab the best views possible. Amazing history behind this landmark, spend some time reading the various stories behind the hotel and it’s penthouse lounge.
