Vesuvio Cafe
Legendary bar & beatnik hangout
Cocktail Bar · Chinatown · $$
“Have yourself a whiskey and toast Kerouac” or just “relax” with “your copy of Howl” at this “legendary” “beatnik hangout” on the Chinatown border, “conveniently” located near City Lights Bookstore, where an “eclectic mix” of tourists and locals checks out the “crazy quilt” of “memorabilia” on the walls before ordering a “decently priced” drink from the “knowledgeable” bartenders; regulars recommend a “table by the windows upstairs” as the perfect place for “people-watching.”

In a land with 10,000 visitors a second it's very easy to get jaded. (Stats are based on how long it takes me to walk to work). Yes there are tons of awesome reviews and yes it's a favorite place. But yet in the 9 weeks that I've been going there... Not even a smile.

Good place for quick drinks. Not a high end bar. They have maintained antique look to give cozy feel. Gas Chandler looks awesome.

Really bad service. Waitress drinking on the job. Didn't bother to serve us after many instances of eye contact and waiving. Very poor attitude when attempting to order a drink at the bar. She said cannot serve you drink because she is not the bartender, but served a drink to her friend at the bar and drank it without care. In front of the customers. Once we were seated at her table, she didn't bother to serve us. I don't take offense to bartenders who drink on the job, but this one takes it too far to the point of dreadful service.
