Vesuvio Cafe
Legendary bar & beatnik hangout
Cocktail Bar · Chinatown · $$
“Have yourself a whiskey and toast Kerouac” or just “relax” with “your copy of Howl” at this “legendary” “beatnik hangout” on the Chinatown border, “conveniently” located near City Lights Bookstore, where an “eclectic mix” of tourists and locals checks out the “crazy quilt” of “memorabilia” on the walls before ordering a “decently priced” drink from the “knowledgeable” bartenders; regulars recommend a “table by the windows upstairs” as the perfect place for “people-watching.”

Absolutely charming little piece of San Francisco history. Good place for a cocktail or beer. Fantastic atmosphere for those wishing to experience the remnants of San Francisco's beat culture. Don't forget to visit City Lights Books right next door, and explore North Beach and China Town.

It's hit or miss regarding bartender friendliness, but this place makes up for it in style. Very European Art Nouveau style and feel. I feel like I'm traveling to France and stepping back in time. They don't make them like this anymore. My favorite bar in all of SF. And I'm always surprised they 90% of the time there is a table available to sit at upstairs. Oh and you have to do it right and get an Absinthe.

A classic San Francisco watering hole with a history of beatniks, poetry and the birth of the hippie and counter-culture movement of the 60s permeating its walls. One of the best bars to grab a drink with a friend and ponder life or people-watch. Jack Kerouac Alley outside is also a great place for a photo op.
