Zushi Puzzle
Inventive sushi in a basic setting
Japanese · Marina District · $$$$
The Zagat Review
Some of the "most unique and uniquely prepared seafood in the city" – including "killer" sushi, sashimi and hand rolls – "beckons" fans to this "funky little" Japanese joint in the Marina; granted, it lacks "the decor of some of the hipper" spots, but if your budget can withstand it, "sit at the bar" overseen by the "fantastic" Roger Chong and "ask for the chef recommendations" "you won’t be disappointed."

I have been coming to Zushi Puzzle regularly for 12+ years now. And unlike so many places where quality or creativity takes a hit after a while, Roger continues to serve what I believe are some of the most creative, freshest and highest quality dishes in the Bay Area. Not limited to sushi restaurants - among any restaurants. Every visit is an exceptional experience, but if you have time to plan ahead, try to reserve some of the limited seating at the bar. Enjoy!!

Best sushi in the city (if you’re sitting at the bar). This man is a legend, and I’m always blown away by the flavors, freshness and quality of his selections. Don’t be fooled by the humble look of the restaurant, I’ve lived in japan for many years, and this is some of the finest sushi in the world.

You have to make phone reservations or else you may have a long wait or not even get a table. We arrived for our 7pm reservation and I had wanted to sit at the bar but there weren't enough chairs for my party of two. If you can get a seat there, you will get a great show my the sushi chef which would up your experience. They have a great selection of fresh fish from Japan on their daily menu. The waiters also try to guide you through the menu but they aren't necessarily too helpful. We ordered some sushi rolls, sashimi, and handrolls. We also got the "best hand roll" as we were told it was the signature best. The main component of that roll was the crab, and I have to say it was pretty good. But I would say the food overall was mind blowing. It was good for a sushi place. But one thing that chips away from the rating is the Chinese staff as you would expect more authentic Japanese food to be served by the Japanese.
