Els 4Gats

Spanish | Barcelona

This tastefully restored Barcelona legend has been around since 1897. The 'Four Cats' (Catalan slang for 'just a few people') was a favorite of Picasso and Rusiñol, who once hung their works on its walls. Now they are reproductions. On a narrow cobblestone street, this fin-de-siècle cafe was a base for members of the moderniste movement, and poetry readings by Joan Maragall and piano concerts by Isaac Albéniz and Enric Granados were regular events. The fixed-price meal is one of the better bargains in town. The homespun Catalan cooking is called cucina de mercat (based on whatever looked fresh at the market) but always includes such classics as suquet de peix (a fish and potato hot-pot) and faves a la catalana (baby broad beans with Serrano ham). Come at lunchtime, as it gets very crowded at night, when musicians play banal 1960s' pop songs.
